Course Purpose
Successfully completing this course will earn you the UEE20120 – Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems, qualifying you to apply for an RSS03 – Refrigerant Handling Licence (restricted to heat pump split systems – installation and decommissioning) through the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC). With this licence, you will be authorised to install, commission, and decommission single-head split system air conditioners and heat pump systems up to 18kW.
This course does not cover service, repair, maintenance, fault diagnosis, electrical work, or the installation of commercial refrigeration, air conditioning, or heat pump systems. If you require training in these areas, we recommend the UEE32225 – Certificate III in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration.

Course Eligibility Criteria & Enrolment Requirements
To enrol in the UEE20120 – Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems, you must meet one of the following prerequisites:
For Electricians:
- Hold a current Electrical Work Licence.
For 3rd or 4th Year Electrical Apprentices:
- Successfully completed the required second-year units of an electrotechnology apprenticeship.
- Have at least two years of industry experience.
For Non-Electrical Workers (via Recognition of Prior Learning – RPL):
Workers from the following trades may be eligible for RPL:
- Qualified Plumbers
- 3rd & 4th Year Plumbing Apprentices (who have successfully completed the second-year units of a plumbing apprenticeship and have at least two years of industry experience)
- Qualified Gas Fitters
For Trade Assistants in Refrigeration & Air Conditioning:
Trade Assistants who have been working full-time for a Refrigeration and Air Conditioning company for a minimum of 6 months may qualify through RPL.
Important Requirements for Trade Assistants:
- Provide a letter from their employer and an ARC-licensed supervisor confirming their experience.
- Submit evidence of two completed installations after completing the course.
Foundation Skills and Competency Requirements
All students are required to demonstrate prior to enrolment with Get Skilled Training (GST), they have the required foundation skills, and in some cases pre-requisite competencies or work experience needed to successfully complete a course. This may require some applicants to undertake an evaluation to determine if they meet the requirements associated with Learning, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Literacy.

Our Adelaide course fees: $1850 (GST-free) paid after enrolment.
Course Duration
Students have up to 12 months to complete this course.
The course includes an online theory component, practical training, and multiple assessments. The online theory must be completed before attending the practical workshops to demonstrate a clear understanding of each unit’s content. This self-paced component includes videos created by our trainers to support your learning and comprehension.

South Australian Course Funding
Funding may be available to eligible SA residents through the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). To receive CITB subsidised training, eligible students are required to supply their valid CITB number to Get Skilled Training at enrolment, which allows us to confirm your eligibility prior to the course commencement. Please note: You must complete the course before Get Skilled Training can process a claim with CITB. Students must provide their bank details to have the subsidy reimbursed, which will be paid within 5 business days of Get Skilled Training receiving the CITB subsidy. It may take 2 weeks for CITB to approve the funding rebate after Get Skilled Training has submitted the claim (please allow 3 to 4 weeks after completion of your course to receive the rebate).
Apprentices within the first 24 months of their apprenticeship will not be eligible for funding as referenced in the CITB Apprentice Toolkit Booklet. The subsidy cannot be provided for units of competency that credit transfer is granted for.
South Australian Licencing Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will meet the educational requirements to apply for the following licences:
- RSS03 – Refrigerant handling licence (Restricted heat pump – split systems – installation and decommissioning) with the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC).
- Building Work Supervisor Registration – Air Conditioning Installation (Limited To Wall or Ground Mounted Split Systems) with Consumer and Business Services (CBS).
All students in a supervisory or higher level role will be required to apply for a Building Work Supervisor Registration – Air Conditioning Installation (Limited To Wall or Ground Mounted Split Systems).
All work must be carried out under a Building Work Contractor’s Licence. For more details, refer to the Building Work Contractor’s Licence guidelines.
