Install, commission, service and repair refrigeration and air conditioning systems used in residential homes, commercial buildings and industrial facilities.
Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults using wiring diagrams, test instruments and safe refrigerant handling practices—including recovery, evacuation and charging in line with current regulations.
Fabricate, join and pressure-test pipework, and use industry-standard tools to measure, evacuate and verify system performance.
Apply safe work practices, including workplace health and safety, risk management, environmental compliance and regulatory requirements for refrigerant handling and restricted electrical work.
Test, fault-find and repair refrigeration and air conditioning components and system controls.
Maintain and service equipment used for food storage, preservation, cooling and air distribution across a range of applications.

This qualification makes you eligible to apply for the RAC01 – Refrigerant Handling Licence with the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC), allowing you to legally handle refrigerants across Australia. Additionally, it meets the electrical regulatory requirements for restricted electrical work in most states and territories, enabling you to work on systems operating above 50V AC or 120V DC—an essential skill for qualified plumbers looking to expand their capabilities.
If you do not complete the full course, you will still receive a Statement of Attainment for the competencies you have successfully achieved.

Course Information
Course Prerequisites
To enrol, you must:
Hold a Certificate II in Split Air Conditioning and Heat Pump Systems (or equivalent).
Be a qualified electrician or plumber with relevant industry experience.
Have a valid RSS03 – Refrigerant Handling Licence (RHL) or be eligible to obtain one.
Foundational Skills and Competency Requirements
All students are required to demonstrate prior to enrolment with Get Skilled Training (GST) they have the required foundation skills, and in some cases pre-requisite competencies or work experience needed to successfully a course. This may require some applicants to undertake an evaluation to determine if they meet the requirements associated with Learning, Literacy, Numeracy, and Digital Literacy.
Course Duration
The full duration of this course ranges from 12 to 24 months. However, each student’s course period will be determined during their pre-assessment and RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) status through:
- An RPL conversation
- Any additional requirements determined by a trainer
This course has an online theory component as well as practical training and several assessments. The online theory will need to be completed to demonstrate the student’s understanding of the content involved in each unit. This component can be completed at your own pace, and includes videos created by our trainers to assist you with developing your knowledge and understanding in installing, decommissioning, fault-finding, and repairing of refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

The course cost is determined on a case-by-case basis, depending on your current experience, qualifications, and ability to demonstrate practical knowledge. Your final course fee will be assessed during your Pre-Assessment and Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process.
