How to Become an Apprentice?
Thinking about becoming an apprentice but not sure where to start? Here’s the process in three simple steps:
1. Secure an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice.
To find an apprenticeship opportunity, you can:
- Search apprenticeship job ads online
- Contact a jobactive provider
- Connect with an Apprenticeship Connect Australia Provider (ACAP)
- Reach out directly to Get Skilled Training for guidance
2. Sign a Training Contract
Once you’ve found an employer, you’ll meet with an Apprenticeship Connect Australia Provider (ACAP) to complete a training contract. This is a legal agreement between you and your employer outlining your rights, responsibilities and training pathway.
During this step, make sure you select Get Skilled Training as your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).
3. Begin your apprenticeship and on the job training
You’ll start working onsite with your employer, gaining hands-on experience while completing your qualification through Get Skilled Training’s structured training and assessments. This combination of real-world tasks and guided learning builds your skills and confidence throughout your apprenticeship.
Who is Involved in an Apprenticeship?
There are four key parties in an apprenticeship: the apprentice (you), your employer, Get Skilled Training as your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO), and your Apprenticeship Connect Australia Provider (ACAP).
Here’s how we each play a part:
Find an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice
Choose your training provider (SRTO) and ACAP provider (your employer may help with this decision)
Work on your employer’s jobsite to build real-world skills
Attend scheduled practical training sessions and complete online theory tasks
Communicate with your trainer and employer if you need support or extra help
Employs you and agrees to support your apprenticeship training
Pays your wages while you gain skills and complete your qualification

What Does It Cost to Complete an Apprenticeship?
Apprentice’s Wages
As an apprentice, you are employed and paid by your employer while completing your training. For information on pay rates, allowances and entitlements, visit the Fair Work Ombudsman.
Training Costs
Government-subsidised funding is available for eligible students enrolling in this course through an Apprenticeship Pathway. These subsidies help reduce the cost of your training. In some cases, the full cost is covered and you won’t pay anything. In other cases, you may be required to pay a co-contribution fee (an out-of-pocket contribution). Reduced co-contribution (concession) fees may apply if you meet eligibility criteria such as holding a valid concession card, identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, being under 17 and not at school, or experiencing genuine financial hardship.
Get Skilled Training is a Skills Assure Supplier (SAS) approved by the Queensland Government Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET).
This means we are authorised to deliver government-subsidised apprenticeship training through the following funding programs:
- Career Start Program
- Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s
- School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs)
For further details about our funding programs, co-contribution costs and concession eligibility, please visit our Course Funding page.
Tools
Apprentices are required to purchase their own tools for use on the job. Your Apprenticeship Connect Australia Provider (ACAP) can advise on available government incentives to support these costs.
