How to Employ an Apprentice?
Thinking about hiring an apprentice, or looking to transfer your current apprentice’s training to Get Skilled Training?
Here’s how we make the process simple:
You may be approached directly by someone seeking an apprenticeship, advertise through job platforms, or connect with local schools and job agencies. Apprentices can be school-based, recent school leavers, or mature-aged applicants.
If you’re unsure where to start, our team can provide general guidance.
You and your employee will meet with an Apprenticeship Connect Australia Provider (ACAP) to set up the training contract. This is a legal agreement between you and the apprentice. During this step, select Get Skilled Training as your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).
If you’re transferring from another RTO, simply speak with your ACAP provider to update the contract and nominate Get Skilled Training.
Your apprentice will gain hands-on experience at your workplace while we provide the structured training and assessments required to complete their trade qualification. We’ll support you and your apprentice throughout the training journey.
Who is Involved in an Apprenticeship?
There are four key parties that work together to support an apprentice’s training journey: you (the employer), the apprentice, Get Skilled Training as the Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO), and an Apprenticeship Connect Australia Provider (ACAP).
Here’s how we each play a part:
Actively participate in workplace tasks to build real-world skills
Attend scheduled training and assessment sessions
Complete online theory modules and learning activities
Ask questions and communicate if support is needed
Employ the apprentice and provide a safe, supportive learning environment
Pay wages while they develop skills and complete their qualification
Offer supervised, hands-on experience relevant to the trade
Provide varied tasks to help build competency for assessment
Work with Get Skilled Training to confirm readiness for training and skill checks
Establish the training contract with you and the apprentice
Provide advice on apprenticeship requirements, pathways, and obligations
Assist with government incentives and funding
Offer pastoral support throughout training and employment
Manage updates, extensions and completion of the training contract
Develop an individualised training plan aligned to onsite work
Deliver practical training in-centre
Provide flexible, self-paced online learning resources
Track progress and offer support when challenges arise
Assess competency against industry requirements
Issue the nationally recognised trade qualification upon completion
What Does It Cost to Employ an Apprentice?
Apprentice’s Wages
As the employer, you are responsible for paying your apprentice’s wages while they complete their training. Pay rates, allowances and entitlements are set under the relevant industrial award. For detailed wage information, visit the Fair Work Ombudsman.
Training Costs
Government-subsidised funding is available for eligible apprentices enrolling in this course. These subsidies significantly reduce the cost of training and assessment. In some cases, the full cost is covered. Where a contribution is required, a co-contribution fee (an out-of-pocket contribution) may apply. This fee can be paid by either you or the apprentice.
Reduced co-contribution (concession) rates may apply if the apprentice meets eligibility criteria such as holding a valid concession card, identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, being under 17 and not at school, or experiencing genuine financial hardship.
Get Skilled Training is a Skills Assure Supplier (SAS) approved by the Queensland Government Department of Trade, Employment and Training (DTET).
This means we are authorised to deliver government-subsidised apprenticeship training through the following funding programs:
- Career Start Program
- Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s
- School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SATs)
For further details about our funding programs, co-contribution costs and concession eligibility, please visit our Course Funding page.
Tools
Apprentices are required to purchase their own tools for use on the job. Your Apprenticeship Connect Australia Provider (ACAP) can advise on available government incentives to support these costs.
